Vivenda da Saudade has been a longtime dream of Adalberto Pinheiro (Al Pinheiro) as he wanted to return to his roots and build a house in his homeland where he left at age twelve with his widowed mother Maria to the United States. Al has lived in the United States since 1964 and is married to Vilma Pinheiro who also immigrated to the U.S. when she was 3 years old. They have 3 children David, Gena, Justin and 3 grandchildren. They have owned Caravelle World Travel since 1990 and Al Pinheiro Insurance since 1976. Al has also been involved with local politics in his hometown of Gilroy, where he has served on the planning commission, city counselor and as mayor from 2003 to 2012. Al’s passion for his homeland kept him connected and finally in 2007 he finished building Vivenda da Saudade on the beautiful coastline of Terceira in the village of Sao Mateus da Calheta. Al and Vilma’s goal was someday to turn their home into a Bed and Breakfast where they would spend their time between the U.S. and the Azores.
